What began with a burning desire for convenient worship transformed into the St Paul’s Baptist Church. This church stands as a testament to faith and resilience. Its history is a tapestry woven with dedication and community spirit.
Our story begins in 1883. Mrs. Frances Fields and Mrs. Mary Henryhand lived in North Philadelphia. They found the journey to Shiloh Baptist Church in South Philadelphia too difficult. They yearned for a closer place to worship. Mr. Burton Rodgers shared their vision.
By 1889, thirteen others joined their cause. They formed the Morning Star Baptist Mission. Rev. Henry Thompson became their pastor. Their first church home was a house at 1424 North Marvine Street. They later moved to 1222 North Eleventh Street.
In 1890, Rev. Edward William Johnson became the pastor. He had organized the first Colored Church of Morristown New Jersey. The mission then officially became St Paul’s Baptist Church.
Rev. Johnson was ordained in 1892. By 1894, membership grew rapidly. They needed a larger space. They purchased the Christ Evangelical Church building. It was located at 948-952 North Eighth Street. They applied for a charter.
On January 21, 1895, the church received its charter. Extensive renovations began. The mortgage was burned in December 1901. This marked a period of great success.
Tragedy struck in 1906. A fire broke out due to an overheated flue. Seventeen lives were lost. Many others were injured. Despite this immense sadness, the members rallied. They raised funds to repair the damaged building. St Paul’s Baptist Church continued.
The church outgrew its renovated facility. A more spacious building became available. It was located at Tenth and Wallace Streets. After alterations, the congregation marched into their new home. This happened on Sunday August 27, 1916.
In 1928, Edwin Luther Cunningham joined the church. He was a nineteen-year-old divinity student. He came from Lincoln University. In 1935, he was licensed and ordained by Pastor Johnson.
After forty-six years of service, Rev. Edward William Johnson passed away. This happened on February 2, 1936. Rev. Edwin Luther Cunningham became Acting Pastor. On February 25, 1937, he became the second pastor.
The 1940s and 50s saw an increase in community services. Home and Foreign Mission activities thrived. Social action became vital. In the 1960s, the church faced a crucial decision. Should they stay at Tenth and Wallace Streets? Or move to a new location? They decided to stay true to their evangelistic mission.
In 1960, an anonymous donor gave $135000 to Rev. Cunningham. This was for a community house. It would be adjacent to the church. Groundbreaking took place on September 10, 1961. The St Paul’s Baptist Church Community Center opened on February 7, 1963.
After twenty-seven years, Rev. Cunningham passed away. This happened on November 1, 1964.
Early in 1961, Rev. Arthur Lee Johnson was ordained. He was a graduate of Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary. In 1964, he became Acting Pastor. On November 18, 1965, he became St Paul’s third pastor.
Under Pastor Johnson’s leadership, many improvements were made. Bibles and hymnals were purchased. A modern elevator was installed. The church also got a new organ new pews and new carpeting.
After thirty-three years, Rev. Arthur Lee Johnson retired in 1998.
Rev. C. Matthew Hudson Jr. became pastor. His installation was on March 10, 2002. During his tenure, renovations and repairs were completed. The Pastor’s study and other rooms were remodeled. The Sanctuary and staff offices were air-conditioned.
On January 15, 2006, Dr. Hudson resigned.
On May 31, 2009, Rev. Leslie D. Callahan preached her first sermon. The Philadelphia media captured this historic moment. She became the first female pastor in the church’s history. Installation services were held on September 27, 2009.
