In 1866, a beacon of hope emerged for San Antonio’s African-American community: St. Paul United Methodist Church. This plaque commemorates that very legacy. The church wasn’t built from bricks and mortar at first. It started with the unwavering spirit of formerly enslaved individuals from Paine Chapel. They yearned for a place of their own, a spiritual sanctuary. A Reverend named A. Larkin Carper answered their call. He began holding services in homes, nurturing the seeds of faith. Soon, Paine Chapel generously deeded a building, officially establishing the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church. The congregation, fueled by faith and a thirst for knowledge, partnered with the Freedmen’s Bureau. Together, they established the Lincoln School in 1866, providing education for African-American children. In 1872, the church found a more permanent home. Church member McDaniel Webster donated land, and a frame building was erected. This structure was later replaced with a magnificent stone edifice in 1884. The surrounding area became known as St. Paul Square, a testament to the church’s growing influence. The congregation continued to thrive. In 1922, they moved to their current sanctuary, a symbol of their enduring spirit. St. Paul United Methodist Church was more than just a place of worship. It was a pillar of the community, a driving force in the civil rights movement. Reverend Mack Henson’s voice resonated with power as he championed equality in the late 1800s. Dr. Green J. Starnes and other members carried the torch into the 20th century, advocating for education, health, and social justice. During the dark days of segregation, St. Paul House opened its doors. It provided refuge and meeting spaces for travelers who were denied accommodations elsewhere. The church’s commitment to education continued. In 1951, they purchased the former Brackenridge Colored School building, transforming it into a vibrant community educational complex. The story of St. Paul United Methodist Church is a story of resilience, faith, and unwavering commitment to community. It’s a story etched in the heart of San Antonio, a reminder of the power of hope and the enduring pursuit of equality.
