St. Paul Church

Is the air buzzing with anticipation? It might just be the spirit of St. Paul Church whispering tales from its past! This unassuming church tucked away in Byculla, Mumbai, has a surprisingly long history. It all started in 1863, making it one of the oldest churches in Mumbai. St. Paul Church holds the distinction of being the first Tamil church in the city. It served as a spiritual home to a diverse congregation of Tamils, Marathi’s, and Hindustanis. Imagine the hymns and prayers echoing within its walls, a testament to the multicultural fabric of Mumbai! The original structure, built in Kamathipura, was consecrated on St. Paul’s day itself, January 25th, 1872. Fast forward to 1929, the congregation found a new home – an old Baptist chapel on Bellasis Road. This repurposed chapel, dedicated on August 27th, 1929, became the St. Paul’s Tamil Church we know today. Through the years, St. Paul Church has been more than just a place of worship. It’s a beacon of community service, its members actively involved in uplifting the downtrodden by visiting prisons, orphanages, and old age homes. Their actions embody a faith that extends beyond the church walls, a true testament to St. Paul Church’s enduring legacy in the heart of Mumbai.
