Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Chennai, stands St. Patrick’s Church. A silent sentinel near St. Thomas Mount, it beckons us to explore its intriguing story. St. Patrick’s Church has served as a spiritual haven for the community since 1887. Initially built for the garrison in 1830 by Daniel O. L. Auig, the Vicar Apostolic of Madras, St. Patrick’s Church replaced an older structure. The parish itself boasts a rich history, tracing its roots back to 1575 when it gained independence from San Thome. Records reveal that as early as 1791, figures like Manoel de Virgem Maria served this parish. Time took its toll on the original building. By 2008, it had fallen into disrepair. Recognizing the need for renewal, John Bosco spearheaded the construction of a new church. This magnificent structure, modeled on the Roman style, replaced the dilapidated one, breathing new life into the parish. The church also features a beautiful Grotto of Our Lady, inspired by the one in Lourdes. Today, St. Patrick’s Church thrives under the guidance of Shylock Stephen. It serves a large and vibrant community of over 2000 Roman Catholic families.
