Born around 1060, he rose through the ranks to become a trusted advisor to emperors and a skilled diplomat. He played a crucial role in negotiating the Concordat of Worms in 1122, settling the Investiture Controversy that had gripped Europe. Yet, what brings us to this unassuming church is his missionary work in Pomerania. Imagine him, in 1124, embarking on a mission to Christianize the region. Unlike earlier attempts that relied on force, Otto understood the importance of presentation. He arrived with an entourage, dressed in finery, demonstrating the power and influence of Christianity. St. Otto von Bamberg preached, baptized, and oversaw the destruction of pagan temples. He challenged practices like infanticide and polygamy, offering a new moral code. He established churches, including the Peter-und-Paul-Kirche in Stettin, leaving a lasting mark on the region. A fascinating anecdote describes a costly fish being presented to Otto. He declined, stating, “Far be it from me to consume in one day so much money. Go, take this fish to a poor or sick man; I, who am yet strong, can content myself with a piece of bread.” This act of humility speaks volumes about his character.
