Imagine a colossal spire piercing the Hamburg sky. That’s St Nikolai. Its imposing silhouette a stark reminder of a turbulent past. St Nikolai wasn’t always a ruin. This church dedicated to Saint Nicholas patron saint of sailors has a long and fascinating history.

The first chapel a simple wooden structure appeared in the 12th century. It stood on the Alster River’s banks. This humble beginning evolved into a sizeable brick and stone church. This church expanded over centuries. It became a prominent landmark in Hamburg.

Tragedy struck in 1842. The Great Fire of Hamburg consumed St Nikolai. It was the first large public building to fall victim to the flames. The devastating fire shocked the city. It spurred an ambitious rebuilding project.

For two glorious years St Nikolai held the title of the world’s tallest building. This achievement was short lived. The Rouen Cathedral surpassed it in height.

The Second World War brought further devastation. Operation Gomorrah the Allied air raids on Hamburg left much of the city in ruins. St Nikolai was severely damaged. Incredibly the spire survived relatively intact. It served as a grim landmark for Allied pilots. The crypt also withstood the bombing. This crypt now houses a poignant World War II museum.
