Have you heard the tale of a saint who traveled to the Holy Land? Right here, before you, stands the St. Nicholas Church. It is nestled inside the town of Beit Jala, a place that holds this saint close to its heart. The St. Nicholas Church is named after Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of Beit Jala, who is believed to have spent part of his life as a hermit in a cave beneath the church. The church itself was built in 1925, during the British Mandate era. The church features an icon of St. Nicholas, and a perpetual flame burns in his honor. The townspeople believe that St. Nicholas saved Beit Jala from the devastation of war, especially during World War I. On December 19th, the feast day of St. Nicholas, the town of Beit Jala comes alive with vibrant celebrations. The festivities include lively processions, theatrical performances, choral concerts, and a vibrant Christmas market. Pilgrims from across Palestine and beyond come to share in this rich celebration. You can almost feel the joy and reverence that surrounds the St. Nicholas Church in Beit Jala.
