Whispers of faith echo through time. This is St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church. Right here in the heart of New York City stands a testament to unwavering devotion.
St Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church wasn’t always here. Its story begins long ago with Ukrainian immigrants. They arrived in the early 1900s seeking a new life. Their faith was a constant companion. They longed for a place of worship that reflected their heritage.
In 1916 they formed a religious corporation. It was called The Ruthenian Catholic Church of Saint Nicholas of Hudson NY Inc. The first services were held in another church. This was a temporary arrangement. The dream of their own church remained strong.
Years passed. The community grew. Finally in 1922 they purchased a house. This wasn’t just any house. It was a large three-story residence. They transformed it into a chapel and a home for their priest. It served as a temporary sanctuary.
A new and larger church was needed. When a local cement company was demolished the parish made a bold request. They asked for the bricks. The company generously donated them. The parishioners transported and stored the bricks. It was a monumental task done with faith and determination.
On July 4 1943 the first service was held in the new church. The official dedication followed on September 9 1943. It was a joyous day. The interior was decorated in the traditional Eastern Rite style. An iconostasis was installed along with beautiful icons.
Even the magnificent building we see today is a result of perseverance. In 2005 an opportunity arose. A larger closed church became available. The parish exchanged its property for the new church. The new church was redecorated with an iconostasis and other traditional furnishings. Bishops Paul Chomnycky and Basil Losten performed the rededication.
St Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church is more than just a building. It’s a living legacy. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of the Ukrainian community in New York. It stands as a beacon of faith hope and perseverance. A place of profound spiritual meaning. It continues to serve as a spiritual center for generations to come.
