It began as a simple brick structure, designed by James Miller, amidst the new housing estate of Hillington in the 1930s. Its round arches and pillars stood stark against the surrounding green fields. Dedicated on November 25, 1937, St Nicholas’ Cardonald Church held its first communion with just over 200 participants. They even borrowed communion cups from a neighboring church. The first minister, Reverend John Turner, arrived in 1938. Just months later, the church’s morning service was broadcast by the BBC. By 1947, St Nicholas’ Cardonald Church boasted a membership exceeding 1,000. This growth continued, reaching nearly 2,000 by 1962, necessitating the use of nearby school facilities. The church finally acquired its own hall that same year, completing the vision. In 2015, St Nicholas’ Cardonald Church united with Penilee St Andrew, forming the St Andrew and St Nicholas parish.
