Founded in 1858 by the Marist Brothers St Mungo’s Academy stands proudly before you. This impressive institution wasn’t always located here on Crownpoint Road. Its story begins in a much humbler setting. Initially established to educate poor Catholic boys many of them Irish immigrants or their children St Mungo’s first opened its doors at 96 Garngad Hill. Named for Glasgow’s patron saint St Mungo the academy aimed high. Its founders envisioned a Catholic professional class educated to university level.

Overcrowding forced several moves. The school eventually settled on Parson Street in Townhead. But even there space was tight. The Education Act of 1918 significantly increased demand. The student body swelled from 350 to over 1000 in a decade. Lay teachers joined the Marist Brothers. Students came from far beyond Glasgow. Many travelled daily from surrounding counties. This was because Catholic secondary schools were scarce elsewhere. The school’s population also reflected a wave of migration from the Highlands Italy and post-World War II Poland.

The school’s success was remarkable. Its debate team achieved an unprecedented feat. They became the first Scottish team to represent the UK at the World Parliamentary Debate Competition winning the prestigious title. First Minister Nicola Sturgeon personally congratulated them. St Mungo’s wasn’t just about academics. Athletics rugby and football thrived. The football team alone boasts an astounding 16 Scottish Schools Championships 47 Glasgow School Championships and 18 Glasgow Cups.

By the 1970s the Parson Street building proved unsafe. Construction began on the current site. A fire tragically destroyed old school registers in 1975. In 1976 St Mungo’s Academy opened its doors at its current location. It transitioned from a boys’ school to a co-educational one. By 1989 it was a comprehensive state Roman Catholic school.

Today St Mungo’s Academy remains a vibrant hub. It serves a diverse multicultural community. Its students speak over 50 languages. The academy maintains a strong connection to its past. The Former Pupils’ Association founded in 1884 continues to thrive. It holds monthly meetings fostering a lasting bond between alumni. The academy’s legacy is one of academic excellence athletic achievement and strong community ties. It’s a legacy built on hard work and a dedication to nurturing the potential of its students a legacy embodied in the school motto Nil sine labore Nothing without labour.
