Do you know about a mother’s unwavering love and faith? That’s the essence of St Monica Catholic Church. Founded in 1897 St Monica Parish has been a beacon of hope. Its story stretches back to 1879. Augustinians traveled from Villanova to celebrate Mass. They gathered in the borough hall back then.
St Monica Church is a place where restless hearts find peace in Christ. It is a sanctuary for all. The church believes in authentic connections. They value the joy of simple living. They are devoted to the transformative love of God.
The original church sadly succumbed to a fire in 1991. But the community’s spirit remained unbroken. Generations continue to find rest and peace here.
St Monica herself was born in North Africa in the fourth century. Her son was Saint Augustine. She instilled Christian beliefs in him. Monica converted her pagan husband. She did so through her prayers and holy life. After his death she grieved deeply. Her son Augustine strayed in morals and faith. A bishop consoled her. He said “It is not possible that the son of so many tears should perish”.
Augustine went to Carthage then Italy. But his mother followed him praying always. In Milan Bishop Ambrose guided him. Augustine then returned to the true faith. Saint Monica’s sorrow turned into joy. Monica and Augustine began to return to Tagaste. But she died en route in Ostia Italy. She waited to board the ship. She died happy knowing her prayers were answered. Her husband converted. Her son returned to Christianity.
St Monica’s feast day is August 27. We celebrate her patience and unwavering faith. She is the patron saint of mothers and wives. She is also the patron saint of alcoholics. She watches over difficult marriages. She is a symbol of conversion.

Alexandra LaMastra is the music director. Cathy Levine is the Parish Administrative Assistant. Tom Phillips directs parish operations. Elise Sitzman handles communications. Mike Wallace manages facilities. Reverend Allan Fitzgerald offers pastoral assistance.
St Monica Catholic Church is a vibrant community. It serves the Converse area. It is known for its strong ministries. These include a variety of outreach programs. The church started as a small parish in 1960. It has grown into an active faith community. It is part of the Archdiocese of San Antonio.
Ministries include Altar Society and Bereavement support. There is also a Family of the Rosary. Marriage Enrichment is available. Sacramental Prep is offered. Small Christian Communities exist. A Spanish Prayer Group meets regularly. Youth groups include GLOW EDGE and Teen Life. There are also groups for Young Adults and Seniors.
Deacon Sean Dooley serves the community. Deacon Jose Joel Castellanos ministers here too. Deacon David Espinoza is available. Deacon Raul Mata also serves. Deacon Jacques Abat is now retired.
