Gazing up at the distinctive architecture, have you ever wondered about the resilience of faith and architecture? This is St. Mina Coptic Orthodox Church. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Coptic Orthodox community in Bucharest. St. Mina Coptic Orthodox Church’s story is one of rebirth and renewal. The original church on this site traces its roots back to the early 18th century. It bore the name “Vergu”, a nod to a prominent paharnic (cup-bearer) from the late 17th century. Sadly, this early structure met its demise in a series of devastating earthquakes in 1838 and 1853. The Great Fire of Bucharest in 1847 further ravaged the site. Yet, from the ashes, the community’s devotion rose again. The church we see today, the St. Mina Coptic Orthodox Church, was completed in 1874. It became a sanctuary, housing sacred relics and a revered icon of Saint Mina, known for its miraculous properties. The turn of the 20th century saw renovations in 1900, adding the elegant portico we admire today. The church’s interior glowed with fresh paint in 1901. However, the tremors of the 1940 earthquake necessitated further repairs. These were completed between 1941 and 1943 under the guidance of architect Constantin Joja. The imposing dome received crucial reinforcement in 1945. The church’s frescoes were also lovingly restored. The seismic waves of 1977 again tested the church’s fortitude. Subsequent repairs and repainting followed. The church was then rededicated in 1981. The bell tower, a more recent addition, graces the skyline since 2002. St. Mina Coptic Orthodox Church isn’t just a building. It is a symbol of unwavering faith and community spirit. It showcases a blend of architectural styles, from its Neo-Brâncovenesc elements to its polygonal altar apse and multi-faceted domes.
