Whispers of 1918 echo here at St Michans’s Constituency. Imagine the streets teeming with life. This area St Michans’s was a vital part of Dublin. It sent one Member of Parliament to the UK House of Commons from 1918 to 1922. It used the first past the post system. Interestingly St Michans’s also served as a constituency for Dail Eireann from 1918 to 1921.

St Michans’s Constituency encompassed the Arran Quay and Glasnevin wards. Glasnevin joined the city in 1900 previously part of County Dublin. Arran Quay transferred from the College Green division. The area included both St Michan’s Church of Ireland and St Michan’s Catholic Church. St Michans’s wasn’t just a geographical area it was a political battleground.

The 1918 general election saw a dramatic shift in Irish politics. Sinn Fein’s manifesto called for a constituent assembly. Their victory was stunning. Michael Staines a Sinn Fein member won St Michans’s seat. He and others chose to sit in Dail Eireann instead of the UK Parliament. This act symbolized a growing desire for Irish independence.

The Government of Ireland Act 1920 reshaped the political landscape. St Michans’s along with Clontarf and St James’s formed Dublin North-West. This new constituency had four seats for Southern Ireland and one at Westminster. The 1921 election saw Sinn Fein win uncontested. Staines became one of four TDs for Dublin North-West.

The Irish Free State Agreement Act 1922 ended St Michans’s representation in the UK Parliament. After the October 1922 dissolution no vote was held there. The area became part of the newly independent Irish Free State. The legacy of St Michans’s Constituency 1918 remains. It represents a pivotal moment in Irish history a time of intense political change and the fight for self-determination. This small area played a crucial role in shaping modern Ireland. Remember the echoes of those historic votes as you leave St Michans’s.
