“A church built on a cliff?” a startled voice might ask. Yes, here at St. Michael’s le Pale Church Yard, we stand on what was once a dramatic cliff face, nine meters above the Poddle River. You see, St. Michael’s le Pale, founded in the 8th century, wasn’t just any church. It was dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel, patron saint of high places and mariners. Churches honoring him were often built on elevated ground, reflecting his celestial domain. Imagine this church, with its round tower, reaching for the sky, a beacon to those navigating the waters below. It even played a role in naming Dublin itself. The name ‘le Pale’ refers to the ‘pool’ or ‘pond’ created by the Poddle River meeting the Liffey. This confluence was called Dubh Linn, the Black Pool, from which Dublin got its name. Sadly, time hasn’t been kind to St. Michael’s le Pale. The once-proud tower, having stood for 700 years, met its demise in a storm in 1706. The church itself was deconsecrated in 1682. Though only a churchyard remains, the echo of its significance lingers. As you stand here, think of the Viking ships that once sailed past, the murmur of prayers echoing from the church, and the city growing around this ancient landmark. St. Michael’s le Pale Church Yard might be a quiet space now, but it holds within its grounds the echoes of Dublin’s rich and layered past.
