St Michael Church didn’t spring up overnight. Its origins trace back to 1407. Bishop Heinrich II von Erle a Benedictine monk laid the foundation. Construction took nearly two decades a testament to the dedication of those who built it. Consecration finally arrived in 1426.
But this wasn’t the church’s first location. Originally part of a Benedictine monastery. It shared space with the ducal castle on the Kalkberg rock. A rebellion in 1371 destroyed the castle.
