Isn’t it remarkable how a single building can embody centuries of faith and community? Today we explore St Michael & All Angels. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Isle of Man.

St Michael & All Angels was built in 1835. The architect John Welch designed this building. But this church is not the first sacred structure on this site.

Before this, an older Treen Church and burial ground stood here. Locals knew it as Cronk-y-Keilleig. Bishop Ward directed the erection of the new church in 1834. So this ground has been holy for a very long time.

Look up at the clock tower of St Michael & All Angels. Bishop Bardsley presented that clock to the parish in 1887. It has faithfully marked the passage of time for generations.

Now, imagine the sounds that once filled this space. The current organ has an interesting history. It was previously used in St Nicholas Chapel at Bishop’s Court. Bishop Hill presented it here. He also funded other alterations and improvements.

Inside St Michael & All Angels on the north wall of the nave is the 1922 War Memorial Tablet. Archibald Knox designed it. It is made of Sicilian marble. The tablet has eleven sides. This is to denote the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of 1918. Fourteen names of parishioners who fell in the Great War are inscribed on it. Each name tells a story of sacrifice.

Step outside to the entrance of the Parish Burial Ground. You will see inscribed words “I am the resurrection and the Life”. This Lychgate was designed by Mr Armitage Rigby. The Manx Museum and Ancient Monument Trustees commissioned it in 1907.

Bishops Wilson, Hildesley, Mason, Cregan and Thornton Duesbury are all buried here. This is due to the proximity to Bishop’s Court. Bishop’s Court was the official residence of the bishops of Sodor and Man until 1976. The location underscores the close ties between church leadership and this sacred ground.

Consider the ongoing life within these walls. St Michael & All Angels hosts regular services. It also hosts Cell Group, CAMEO, Michael Bear Club and Messy Church. It is not just a historical site. It is a vibrant center for the community.

As you leave St Michael & All Angels remember its layers of history. From its ancient roots as Cronk-y-Keilleig to its present-day role as a community hub this church embodies the spirit of the Isle of Man. It is a place where past and present meet. Faith and community intertwine.
