Long ago in Hildesheim a blind girl regained her sight. This miracle happened at Bishop Bernward’s tomb in St Michael’s Church. This isn’t just any church. St Michael’s Church in Hildesheim is a masterpiece of early Romanesque architecture. Bishop Bernward himself a tutor to Emperor Otto III oversaw its construction between 1010 and 1022. It’s a testament to Ottonian and Romanesque design. The church’s symmetrical double-choir basilica is stunning. Its alternating supports are a hallmark of the era.

St Michael’s boasts a unique painted wooden ceiling. This flat ceiling a marvel in Germany depicts the Tree of Jesse. It traces Christ’s genealogy.
