Founded in 1927 St Matthew Parish began its journey. It wasn’t always located where it stands today. The first Mass was held in a rectory at 3406 Cottman Avenue. A prefabricated chapel from Hog Island temporarily served as the church. Imagine the contrast between this humble beginning and the grandeur we see before us now. St Matthew Highway Church of the Apostolic Faith has grown. It has evolved over the decades.
The original church building was eventually replaced. A new church was built. The cornerstone of the first school was laid in 1936. The Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary arrived in 1937. They opened the school that same year. This school played a central role in the parish’s life. It provided education to generations of children. Many parishioners remember their time at St Matthew’s school fondly.
Sadly the school auditorium suffered an arson fire in 1988. This was a significant setback. But the community rebuilt. The spirit of St Matthew Highway Church of the Apostolic Faith remained unbroken. Through tragedy and triumph the church persevered. The parish continued to grow and thrive.
The church building underwent various renovations and expansions. New additions were made. The upper church was consecrated in 1960. A new rectory was completed in 1961. A gym and additional classrooms were added in 1962. These improvements catered to the growing congregation. They enhanced the community’s facilities.
The installation of air conditioning in 1970 was a welcome improvement. It modernized the church. It made it more comfortable for parishioners.
