Could a church be more than just a building? At St Matthew’s in Cambridge, the answer is a resounding yes. St Matthew’s is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to 150 years of faith, community, and transformation. St Matthew’s was planted in a deprived area of Cambridge. The very first sermon preached within its walls focused on “Christ crucified.” The congregation grew rapidly. This growth spurred the creation of two more churches. It also inspired the establishment of schools and a medical center, extending St Matthew’s impact beyond spiritual needs. The church experienced another wave of growth during a charismatic renewal in the 1970s. More recently, in 2008, new members joined St Matthew’s. This “church graft” came from St Andrew the Great in central Cambridge. Now, St Matthew’s looks towards the future. They hope to send out their own team to plant another church. This act would echo the church’s own beginnings and continue the cycle of growth and outreach.
