Founded in 1912 St Mary’s School has a rich history. It began at 18 Weld Road now Jalan Raja Chulan. Only three girls enrolled that first year. The school moved several times. It finally settled on a nine-acre site on Weld Hill Road. The school wasn’t always for girls only. For nineteen years it included a boys’ department. World War II forced its closure. The Japanese army used the building as a hospital. Sadly Miss Pring a former principal died during the war. After the war St Mary’s reopened. The kindergarten section split off in 1946. In 1958 the primary and secondary schools separated. Over the years the school expanded. New buildings arose including science labs and a canteen. The school even had its own magazine Fleur De Lys. Many notable students attended St Mary’s. Two First Ladies of Malaysia were among them. The school moved again in 1998. It relocated to Taman Intan Baiduri. The old school building was eventually demolished. A service apartment now stands in its place. But St Mary’s lives on. It continues to educate and inspire young women in Kuala Lumpur. The legacy of St Mary’s School is strong. Its story shows perseverance and a dedication to education. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of this remarkable institution.
