St. Mary’s School, originally established in Detroit in 1885, wasn’t always located in the serene suburbs of Orchard Lake. It began as a humble institution on Detroit’s east side, founded by Reverend Joseph Dabrowski. His vision was to create a place where Polish-American boys could receive an education grounded in faith and preparing them for the priesthood. Imagine the bustling streets of Detroit in the late 19th century as young boys, eager for knowledge, walked these halls. In 1909, St. Mary’s School embarked on a new chapter, relocating to the sprawling 125-acre campus of the former Michigan Military Academy. This tranquil setting, on the shores of Orchard Lake, became the school’s haven. The move marked a significant expansion, providing ample space for growth. The school’s motto, “Initium Sapientiae Timor Domini” (The beginning of wisdom is the fear of God) resonated through the classrooms and corridors. St. Mary’s offered a comprehensive college preparatory education. Interestingly, the campus itself was a hub of learning, shared with SS. Cyril and Methodius Seminary and Madonna University. The Felician Sisters, arriving in 1935, played a crucial role in shaping the school’s character. And in a landmark decision in 2020, St. Mary’s Preparatory opened its doors to girls, ushering in a new era of co-education. St. Mary’s School was more than just academics. The campus bustled with student life. A hockey arena, a well-stocked library, a serene Marian grotto, and even a private stretch of beach on Orchard Lake provided opportunities for recreation and reflection. Athletics thrived, with 14 varsity sports for boys and a growing number of options for girls. The Eaglets, the school’s athletic teams, forged a legacy of competition, capturing numerous league, district, and regional titles.
