St. Mary’s Hospital Plaque marks the site of the first private hospital in Texas. Imagine the year 1866, the echoes of the Civil War still reverberating. Three French Catholic nuns, Sisters Blandine, Ange, and Joseph, arrived in Galveston with a mission of mercy. They founded Charity Hospital, as St. Mary’s was first known, on a piece of land that once belonged to Fort Scurry, a reminder that even amidst conflict, compassion finds a way. On April 1, 1867, the hospital opened its doors, a beacon of hope in a time of profound uncertainty. But fate, as it often does, had other plans. Just three months later, yellow fever, a ruthless and indiscriminate killer, swept through Galveston. Among its victims was Sister Blandine, a poignant reminder of the risks these women took for the well-being of others. St. Mary’s, however, endured. It weathered storms, both literal and figurative, becoming a sanctuary during the Great Storm of 1900 and later, a lifeline for victims of the Texas City explosions in 1947.
