St Mary’s Episcopal Church in Dorchester boasts a rich history. Founded in 1847 it’s an active congregation within the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts. Its story is one of resilience faith and stunning architecture.

The original church on Bowdoin Street met a tragic end in 1887. A devastating fire destroyed the building. This prompted the building of the current structure at 14-16 Cushing Avenue. Designed by English architect Henry Vaughan in the Tudor Revival style the church was completed in 1888. It’s a testament to Vaughan’s skill. His only known church design in Boston it stands as a beautiful example of his work.

Subsequent expansions added to its grandeur. In 1893 architects Hartwell & Richardson added transepts and a chancel. These perfectly complemented Vaughan’s original design. Charles K. Cummings designed the parish house in 1907 further enriching the complex. St Mary’s boasts an exceptional collection of stained glass. Tiffany Studios and Charles Jay Connick contributed to this magnificent display of artistry. Their artistry has endured the test of time.

The church rests on a high stone foundation built on Roxbury Puddingstone. Its half-timbered exterior is striking. The intricate wooden details are exquisite. The interior is equally impressive.
