On a sun-drenched August day in 1863, St. Mary’s College first opened its doors. It welcomed a modest group of fourteen students to its hallowed halls. The air buzzed with the promise of a new beginning. Located in the vibrant heart of Port of Spain, St. Mary’s College, affectionately known as CIC (College of the Immaculate Conception), stands as a testament to resilience and academic excellence. The journey of St. Mary’s College began a few years earlier. Archbishop Ferdinand English, deeply concerned about the lack of Catholic secondary education options, set a plan in motion. This led to the arrival of the Holy Ghost Fathers in Trinidad. They established the college on the very grounds of the former St. George’s College. The college’s motto, “Virtus et Scientia,” meaning “Manliness and Knowledge,” reflects its commitment to developing well-rounded individuals. Originally, the languages of instruction were English and French, reflecting the diverse cultural influences of the time. The curriculum encompassed a wide range of subjects. These included Latin, Greek, history, geography, science, mathematics, and even music. Over the years, St. Mary’s College faced numerous challenges, including financial difficulties and disagreements with the Archbishop. Yet, it persevered, thanks to the unwavering support of the Catholic community and the Vatican. The college adapted to the changing times. It transitioned from being led primarily by French and Irish principals to having alumni at the helm. This reflected Trinidad and Tobago’s journey towards independence in 1962. Today, St. Mary’s College is a thriving institution with an enrollment of nearly 1,200 students. It prepares them for the CSEC and CAPE examinations. The college boasts a long list of notable alumni who have excelled in various fields. From cricketers like Ellis Achong and Joshua Da Silva to politicians like Eugene Chen and Stuart Young, the influence of St. Mary’s College extends far beyond its walls. It even extends to the world of music with alumni like Jillionaire. St. Mary’s College continues to uphold its tradition of academic excellence. It nurtures young minds and shapes future leaders. As you stand before this historic institution, imagine the countless stories held within its walls. They echo the hopes, dreams, and achievements of generations of students who have walked these very halls.
