“Inconvenient” they said of the journey to the Parish Church. That’s how St Mary’s Church in Port St Mary came to be. Built so the residents of Port St Mary wouldn’t have to travel so far especially in winter.
Let’s step back in time to 1884. Imagine a community pulling together. They were determined to have their own place of worship. Mrs EM Gawne of Kentraugh generously donated the land. Public subscriptions funded the building of St Mary’s Church.
The church quickly became a focal point. The first wedding bells rang in April 1896. Mr and Mrs F Poulson of Bootle were the happy couple. Their names are forever etched on a stone plaque near the organ.
St Mary’s Church has a special gem. It has its own choir enhancing the singing during services. Every second Sunday is special. The church holds an All-Age service.
Each Sunday at 11 am is Morning Worship at St Mary’s. Except for the fourth Sunday. All four churches in the Parish unite for a joint service.
Children are always welcome. St Mary’s Church has a Sunday School. They meet weekly during the 11 am Service. The children start in the church then head to the hall. They do craft work and drama engaging children of all ages.
