“Mother Church of Texas” is more than just a title. The St. Mary’s Cathedral Plaque stands as a testament to faith. It embodies resilience in the face of adversity.

St. Mary’s Cathedral Plaque marks a place of immense historical and spiritual significance. It is a place where the story of Catholicism in Texas began. This plaque commemorates St. Mary Cathedral Basilica. It is not just a building. It’s a living chronicle of faith, perseverance, and community.

Let’s step back to 1842. Father Jean Marie Odin dedicated a small wooden church to the Blessed Virgin Mary. This humble beginning marked the birth of the Catholic Church in Texas. Just one month prior he was consecrated as a bishop. Imagine this small sacristy with only thirty benches.

By 1847, the Catholic community was growing. Construction began on a larger, more permanent church. Pope Pius IX approved the establishment of the Diocese of Galveston. He named Odin as its first bishop. St. Mary Cathedral was dedicated on November 26, 1848.

St. Mary’s Cathedral weathered countless storms. It stood as a beacon of hope. In 1900, the Great Storm ravaged Galveston. Yet, St. Mary’s remained standing. This cemented its place in the hearts of Texans.

In 1979, Pope John Paul II elevated St. Mary Cathedral to the status of a minor basilica. This recognized its importance to the community. It also acknowledged its historical impact on Catholicism in Texas.

Hurricane Ike in 2008 inflicted severe damage. The storm surge pushed five feet of water into the sanctuary. The Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston undertook a massive renovation. After six years, St. Mary’s returned to its former glory in April 2014.

In 2019, the statue of St. Mary, Star of the Sea, was temporarily removed for restoration. The statue was installed atop St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica in 1878. Workers carefully lowered the 11-foot, 3000-pound cast-iron statue to the ground. This allowed necessary repairs to the statue and the Basilica’s roof.

The St. Mary’s Cathedral Plaque before you serves as a reminder. It connects us to the many people who have found solace and inspiration within these walls. It connects us with all who helped build and rebuild this sacred space. It is a reminder of the enduring power of faith. This place has been a beacon of hope for generations.
