Did you know that St Mary the Virgin in Cambridge has witnessed over a thousand years of history? Right here before us stands this magnificent church. Its foundations were laid around 1010. It was first recorded in 1205 as ‘St Mary-by-the-market’. This wasn’t just any church. It became the University of Cambridge church when scholars arrived in 1209. Imagine the bustling activity as these scholars transformed St Mary the Virgin into a hub of learning.

St Mary the Virgin wasn’t immune to the ravages of time. A devastating fire in 1290 reduced it to ashes. The fire wasn’t entirely surprising given the surrounding thatched buildings and wooden market stalls. The reconstruction began in 1478. The church we see today is a testament to that massive rebuilding program. Think of the sheer dedication required to recreate such a grand structure.

The Tudor period brought more drama to St Mary the Virgin. Elizabeth I visited in 1564. However the church wasn’t quite complete. It was surrounded by deep mud. Bags of sand had to be used to cover the mess. Can you imagine the Queen’s reaction? To add insult to injury St Mary’s was fined for not ringing the bells upon her arrival. Even royalty wasn’t immune to the challenges of the time.

But St Mary the Virgin endured. Through riots unrest and even destruction it has survived. It has witnessed royal visits and acts of religious persecution. Martin Bucer a Protestant thinker was buried here. His funeral attracted over 3000 mourners. Mary I later ordered his exhumation and burning. His remains now lie beneath a brass floor plate in the south chancel. St Mary the Virgin is more than just stones and mortar. It’s a living embodiment of Cambridge’s past.

The construction of the tower took 89 years. It was a slow painstaking process. A thatched roof had to be placed and removed multiple times.Tragically the churchwarden John Warren was killed during construction. An inscription on the tower reads ‘Here John Warren sleeps among the dead. Who with the church his own life finished’. The church’s bells have played an important role in the city’s life. They called people to sermons announced lectures and marked public events.

St Mary the Virgin is also a testament to the unique relationship between Cambridge town and gown. The church served as a site of both unity and conflict reflecting the complex history of Cambridge. To this day St Mary the Virgin is a place of worship a meeting place and an important piece of Cambridge’s story. A living monument to the city’s resilience and rich heritage. Its towering presence still holds a special place in Cambridge’s heart. As we stand here we are standing in history. We are standing in the heart of Cambridge.
