“What if these walls could talk?” they might tell tales of faith and community. St Mary Magdalene’s Catholic Church stands here in Bardon. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of its parishioners. Let’s delve into the story of this cherished church.

St Mary Magdalene’s Catholic Church has been a spiritual beacon in Bardon for nearly a century. Before its establishment, Catholics in Bardon travelled to Red Hill for Mass. They attended St Brigid’s Church. This journey continued until 1917. That year Sacred Heart was built. Later, in 1923 St Finbarr’s church opened.

The story of St Mary Magdalene’s Catholic Church began in 1926. On September 5th, Monsignor Byrne VG blessed and laid the foundation stone for the original church. This marked the beginning of a dedicated place of worship in Bardon. The foundation stone still exists today. It can be found on the building now used as the church hall.

Interestingly, this hall has its own story. It is named Lyon’s Hall. Fr Ray Lyons was Bardon’s curate from 1937. He then became the parish priest from 1954 to 1977. His dedication to the community is commemorated by the hall’s name.

Today, St Mary Magdalene’s Catholic Church continues to serve its community. The Catholic Charismatic Renewal Bardon meets here every Friday night. Their gatherings start at 7.30 pm. The church also supports various groups and activities. These strengthen the bonds of faith and fellowship.

While the exact opening date of the original church remains unknown, its legacy is clear. St Mary Magdalene’s Catholic Church has evolved over the years. It remains a vital part of the Archdiocese of Brisbane.

The church is more than just a building. It is a living testament to the faith and commitment of its people. It is a place where God’s word is shared. It is a community that welcomes all. St Mary Magdalene’s Catholic Church stands as a symbol of hope. It is a place where individuals connect with their faith. It is a place to support each other. It is a place that grows the mission God gives us here on Earth.

As you stand here, consider the countless prayers offered within these walls. Think about the baptisms, confirmations, and marriages celebrated here. Imagine the sense of community.
