Founded in 1913 St Mary Magdalene Roman Catholic Church stands as a testament to faith. It began humbly with just 25 families. Their desire for a Christian community led to the first mass in 1902. Father Maurice Fitzgerald from St Monica’s in Jamaica officiated. Imagine those early days. Services were held above a store on Springfield Boulevard.
The first temporary church wasn’t built until around 1907-1908. Samuel Ward constructed it. It was dedicated to St Mary Magdalene patroness of sinners. The church’s style is reminiscent of famous California Spanish missions. The official founding happened in June 1913. Incorporation came on February 26 1914. Christmas Day 1924 saw the opening of this beautiful building. The dedication followed on November 11 1925.
Father John Tinney the first resident pastor arrived in 1913. Ordained in Maynooth Ireland he served until his death in 1947. He secured a rectory for the church after four years of service. Reverend Jeffry T Dillon served as administrator until 2017. Currently Father Gordon P Kusi is the administrator.
St Mary Magdalene has grown significantly. From its humble beginnings it now serves a thriving community of over 300 families. It’s a close-knit Christian community providing spiritual nourishment. The church offers various programs run by volunteers. These programs reflect the church’s mission statement. They strive to meet the needs of the parish community.
