St Martin’s Episcopal Church in Detroit isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to a vibrant community. Founded in 1952 it quickly grew to become the largest Episcopal Church in North America. This remarkable growth is a story etched in stone and stained glass.

From its humble beginnings on four acres of land purchased in 1954 the church expanded steadily. Founders’ Hall the first building still stands as a reminder of its early days. By 1962 a mere ten years later the congregation had already reached a staggering 2791 baptized members. The church continued to grow adding the Wayside Chapel in 1977 and later expanding with the Payne Education Center a library choir hall an activity center and more. These additions reflect the church’s commitment to serving its ever-growing community.

The leadership of St. Martin’s also left an indelible mark. The Reverend Claude Payne served as rector after the Reverend Bagby’s retirement. His tenure saw significant expansion. He later became Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese highlighting the church’s influence. The Reverend Laurence Gipson and the Reverend Dr Russell J Levenson Jr also served as rectors each contributing to St Martin’s legacy.

The year 2004 marked another milestone. A new worship space appropriately called The Church opened. Its design inspired by a 13th century German church boasts 133000 pieces of stunning stained glass. The spires tower 188 feet a beacon visible from afar. The bells a gift from the same foundry that created Big Ben’s bells ring out across the city.

Even the COVID-19 pandemic couldn’t stop St. Martin’s growth. The church adapted quickly adding online sermons and virtual learning. The membership continued to climb exceeding 9500 members.
