Pause for a moment before St Marks, Clayfield. Did you know this church stands as a testament to faith, community and remembrance? St Marks, Clayfield has served the people of Clayfield, Albion and Wooloowin since 1887. It has been a pillar through times of peace and conflict.

St Marks, Clayfield began as a humble timber church. It was first built in Albion in 1888. Bishop Webber moved it to this site on Bonney Avenue in 1899. This area was then known as Maida Hill.

The church quickly became a hub. A hall and Sunday school were added in 1910. These additions accommodated the growing congregation. The hall hosted social groups and community events. These included the Girls Friendly Society and the Boys Gordon Club.

World War I profoundly impacted St Marks. The hall transformed into a center for patriotic efforts. Women knitted socks and raised funds for the Red Cross. They also supported a traveling kitchen for the 5th Light Horse Regiment.

More significantly, St Marks became a place of remembrance. A timber honour board was unveiled in 1916. It listed 110 names of fallen members. A stained glass panel honored Lieutenant Jack Treverne Hockin in 1917. He had died in France. Two more stained glass windows followed in 1918. They depicted St John and St Mary. These memorials showcased the community’s grief and respect.

By the late 1940s, a new church was needed. The original timber building was deteriorating. In 1963, Conrad and Gargett designed a modern brick church. It was dedicated on May 31, 1964. The new St Marks was a war memorial church.

The new design incorporated elements of the old. The stained glass windows were moved to the eastern wall. An additional panel was added. It featured the crests of the Australian armed forces and the Red Cross. This panel honored those who fell in World War II and later conflicts.

Other items from the original church were also preserved. These include the red cedar altar and reredos. The pulpit, baptismal font and Canon Osborn memorial window also found a place in the new St Marks.

St Marks also remembers Reverend John Barge. He was a missionary and a New Guinea Martyr. Barge was murdered by the Japanese in 1942.

In 1977, a bell tower was added. It houses the bell from the original church. Landscaped gardens and a columbarium offer spaces for reflection. Three modern stained glass windows adorn the northern wall.

Today, St Marks Anglican Church stands as a local heritage place. It has provided spiritual guidance and social contact for over a century. The building itself reflects this history. Its low-set brick design and tiled roof offer a welcoming presence. The interior is simple and open. It creates a space for worship and contemplation.

Take a moment to appreciate the blend of old and new within St Marks, Clayfield. It serves as a place of remembrance and a vibrant center for the community. It embodies faith, sacrifice and enduring spirit.
