The Coptic Orthodox Church, founded by St. Mark the Apostle, established itself in Montreal. This happened under the guidance of Pope Kyrellos VI in 1967. St Mark Church of Montreal became the second church in Canada. Importantly, it was the first in Quebec.

The community then began searching for a permanent home. Eight years later, St Mark Church found its anchor. They purchased Saint Gabriel de Lalement Church, built in 1959. It became St Mark Coptic Orthodox Church.
Renovations and artistic touches transformed the building. These changes reflected the Coptic faith and culture. In 1989, Pope Shenouda III visited the refurbished church. He consecrated the icons.
