The Coptic Orthodox Church, founded by St Mark the Apostle, established itself in Montreal in 1967. This happened under the guidance of Pope Kyrellos VI. St Mark Church of Montreal is the second church in Canada. It is the first in Quebec. Father Rafael Y. Nakhla was ordained priest for the new church on March 12, 1967.
The first Liturgy of the Eucharist took place in July 1967. It was held at the Saint Nicolas Syrian Orthodox Church. The search for a permanent building began. Eight years passed before St Mark Church found its present home. The Saint Gabriel de Lalement Church was purchased by the Coptic Church. It was built in 1959. It became St Mark Coptic Orthodox Church.
Renovations and artistic touches transformed the church. These changes reflected the Coptic faith and culture. Pope Shenouda III visited the refurbished church in 1989. He consecrated the icons. Since then, the church has maintained its configuration. Coptic families have increased tremendously.
Today St Mark Church continues to thrive. It is served by Father Victor Nasr and Father Marcos Kirellos. The church remains a vital center for the Coptic community.
