Could a church have two birthdays? Here at St. Marien in Lüneburg, the answer is a resounding yes. St. Marien isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of a community. Our story begins in 1850, a time when Catholicism was re-emerging in Lüneburg after the Reformation. The first St. Marien church, a beautiful example of Brick Gothic architecture, was consecrated in 1858 on Wallstraße. It served as a beacon of faith for a growing congregation. Imagine, after the Reformation, this was only the second Catholic church built in the entire Lüneburg Heath. The original church stood proudly for over a century. It witnessed the joys and sorrows of generations. However, the influx of refugees after World War II brought new challenges. The church, once spacious, was now too small to accommodate the burgeoning Catholic community. A difficult decision had to be made. In 1968, the original St. Marien was demolished. This wasn’t an end, but a new beginning. The community rallied together. They purchased land on Friedenstraße, where we stand today. Construction on the new St. Marien began in 1961. The modern, twelve-sided structure, designed by architect Karlheinz Bargholz, was consecrated in 1963. The church you see before you embodies resilience and hope. It represents the continuation of a legacy, a symbol of faith reborn. The artwork inside, created around 1980 by Josef Baron, adds another layer to St. Marien’s story. The vibrant stained-glass windows, installed in 1995 and designed by Gabi Weiß, illuminate the space with a kaleidoscope of colors. Even the baptismal font, with its charming angel adornment by Herbert Zeitner, holds significance. St. Marien is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a living testament to the unwavering faith of the Lüneburg Catholic community.
