Have you noticed the 70 steps leading up to St. Marien? They hint at the rich history awaiting us. St. Marien, also known as Erfurt Cathedral, is the oldest and largest church in Erfurt. It stands proudly overlooking the Domplatz. Together with St. Severus’ Church, St. Marien forms the city’s landmark.

The site where St. Marien stands has seen many religious buildings. Saint Boniface erected a church here in 742. A Romanesque basilica followed in the mid-12th century. The mound was enlarged in the early 14th century for St. Marien.

In 1184, a dark event occurred. The Erfurt latrine disaster saw many nobles drown. The assembly summoned by Henry VI met with tragedy.

Martin Luther was ordained in St. Marien on April 3, 1507. This event marks an important point in history.

The architecture of St. Marien is mainly Gothic. It dates back to the 14th and 15th centuries. Stained glass windows and interior furnishings add to its beauty. The central spire houses the Maria Gloriosa. This bell was the world’s largest free-swinging bell when cast in 1497. It remains the largest surviving medieval bell, known for its pure tone.

Inside St. Marien treasures await. See the tomb of Count von Gleichen with both his wives. Admire the stucco altar from around 1160. Discover the bronze candelabra called Erfurter Wolfram. Outside, statues of the Wise and Foolish Virgins grace the portal.

The cathedral had some unusual moments in history. During the Napoleonic Wars, French troops used St. Marien as a horse stable. Restoration of the windows and roof lasted nine years after WWII damage.

Don’t miss the stained-glass windows. Thirteen of fifteen have been preserved since medieval times. The high altar built between 1697 and 1707 is also a sight to behold. Statues of St. Peter and St. Paul stand next to it. The Gloriosa bell still rings a few times each year.

St. Marien is more than a building. It is a journey through time. Its history echoes through the centuries. Its beauty captivates all who visit. Take a moment to appreciate the stories held within these walls.
