In 1945, Houston’s western edge was marked by Lamar High School and the River Oaks neighborhood. Right here, where St. Luke’s United Methodist Church stands today, the story began just a few blocks away. A small group of Methodists gathered in the home of Exa and Loyal Nelms. St. Luke’s United Methodist Church was born that evening. The first service was held on November 11, 1945, in Lamar High School’s auditorium. The founders envisioned a church with an extraordinary impact, a legacy for generations. St. Luke’s United Methodist Church has remained true to this vision through years of growth and change. The church’s spire serves as a visual beacon of faith. St. Luke’s United Methodist Church hopes its “spires” of faith, kindness, and generosity will continue to shine brightly in the community and the world. Dr. Tom Pace wondered what legacy we would leave for future generations. He hoped we could be as open to God’s leading as those who gathered in that living room over 75 years ago. St. Luke’s United Methodist Church embarked on a series of renovations and additions. The sanctuary was completely renovated, including AV and organ updates. New marble stairs were installed, opening the altar area to the congregation. A new education building was constructed, becoming the main entrance to the St. Luke’s Westheimer campus. It features the Fellowship Walk and Fellowship Area, a playground, and classrooms for various ministries. A new Student Ministries Building provides a lounge, classrooms, a performance area, and a large worship space. A Contemporary Worship Building was also added. The Gethsemane campus saw renovations to the sanctuary, classrooms, and offices. A new Fellowship Hall serves as a food pantry. A community garden provides produce for the pantry. A new playground and playing field were also added. These improvements have allowed St. Luke’s United Methodist Church to better serve its community and continue its legacy of faith and service.
