“A peculiar blessing” whispered the old woman. This is St Luke’s Church in Delhi. Built in 1979 it stands in Defence Colony. It’s a Roman Catholic parish under the Archdiocese of Delhi.
The land was once considered cursed. Two previous owners died suddenly. One an army major. The other a civilian. Both suffered heart attacks. The plot sat vacant. Then Fr Charles and Fr Pascal Rodrigues sought land for a church. They learned of this unlucky spot. The church acquired the land.
It became St Luke’s residence. A simple dwelling. It wasn’t the grand building we see today. Tragedy struck again. Fr Pascal died six months after the purchase. Fr George took over. He shepherded the church for ten years.
St Luke’s Church is now a vibrant community. Masses are celebrated in English Hindi and Malayalam. It’s near several hospitals. Many medical professionals attend. Doctors nurses and paramedics make up a significant portion of the congregation.
Christmas and Easter are major celebrations. The church fills with worshippers. Devotees gather from across the city. It’s a place of peace and solace. It’s a testament to faith and resilience. It’s a place of hope. A place where a supposed curse was transformed into a blessing. A blessing that continues to this day.
