“A sanctuary born from a merger,” the old-timers might murmur, their voices echoing the whispers of St. Luke U.A.M.E. Church’s past. St. Luke U.A.M.E. Church stands here as a testament to unity, a beacon of faith forged from two distinct congregations. In 1898, St. Luke’s Church and The Church of The Epiphany, each with their own rich histories, intertwined their destinies, creating the Church of St. Luke and The Epiphany. The very stones of this building remember the laying of St. Luke’s cornerstone in 1839, a Greek Revival masterpiece designed by Thomas Somerville Stewart. The church’s facade, with its imposing Corinthian columns, stands as a proud reminder of those early days. The interior whispers tales of transformations. The chancel, once a simple space, now houses the grand organ brought from The Church of The Epiphany during the merger. Later, in 1925, the Austin Organ Company’s creation filled the sanctuary with its rich tones, marking a new era in the church’s musical journey. But St. Luke U.A.M.E. Church is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a story of resilience, a tale of a congregation that weathered financial storms and neighborhood shifts. The echoes of the Great Depression still linger, a time when even the renowned music program faced cuts. Yet, the church persevered, fueled by the unwavering dedication of its members. The spirit of the Rev. David McConnell Steele, whose 30-year rectorship witnessed the true melding of the two original parishes, remains a guiding force. St. Luke U.A.M.E. Church also carries a legacy of compassion and openness. In the face of the AIDS crisis, it opened its doors to those who had been shunned elsewhere, offering solace and support. The Hospitality Center, established in 1989, became a haven for those affected by the disease. St. Luke U.A.M.E. Church continues to serve the community. The church’s embrace extends to various organizations. It offers a meeting place for Alcoholics Anonymous and Dignity USA, a rehearsal space for The Philadelphia Pops, and much more. It has continued its relationship with the Diocese by hosting many conventions. St. Luke U.A.M.E. Church has truly lived up to its name, embodying the spirit of St. Luke, the beloved physician.
