St. Lucia Church

Did the imposing façade of St. Lucia’s Cathedral remind you of St. Peter’s Basilica? You’re not alone. Many visitors have remarked on the resemblance. This grand cathedral, located in Kotahena, Colombo, is more than just a beautiful building. It’s a testament to the resilience and devotion of Sri Lanka’s Catholic community. St. Lucia’s Cathedral traces its roots back to a humble wooden structure built during the Dutch occupation in 1760. At that time, practicing Catholicism was suppressed. Yet, the Oratorian fathers, with their unwavering faith, persevered. They secured land and, in 1782, erected a more substantial church of brick and mortar. This very spot became a sanctuary in 1796 when the British invaded, forcing residents to seek refuge within its walls. St. Lucia’s Cathedral’s significance grew further in 1834. When Ceylon was detached from the Archdiocese of Goa, Fr. Vincenti Rosario was appointed the first Vicar Apostolic of Ceylon, elevating St. Lucia’s to the status of the island’s first cathedral. The cathedral we see today wasn’t built overnight. The original structure, facing collapse, was replaced with the current grand edifice. Bishop H.D. Sillani and Fr. S. Tabarrani, visionaries of their time, designed the new cathedral. Construction began in 1873. The project was a collective effort, funded by contributions from Colombo’s Catholics, churches outside the city, and even the local fisherfolk. A staggering Rs. 160,000 was raised. Despite financial setbacks and the deaths of Bishop Sillani and Fr. Tabarrani, the main structure was finally blessed in December 1887. It took another fifteen years to complete, finally standing finished in 1902. The cathedral’s interior is equally impressive. Adorned with larger-than-life statues of saints, intricately carved confessionals, and a unique dark-skinned Madonna known as ‘Our Lady of Kotahena,’ it’s a feast for the eyes. Look up and you’ll see stained-glass windows casting colorful patterns across the transepts. A massive 4300-pound bell, named ‘Anthony Thomas’, hangs in the choir loft, along with a unique pipe organ. St. Lucia’s Cathedral stands as a beacon of faith, a symbol of endurance, and a testament to the devotion of generations who built and embellished this magnificent tribute to God.
