St Louis Church stands proudly in Chennai. Its history stretches back to 1887. Then it was a mission centre under the Archdiocese of Madras. Today it’s a parish under the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore. The current church building however was inaugurated much later on July 20 1964. It was a cherished project of Archbishop Louis Mathias SDB.
A key aspect of St Louis Church is its strong community spirit. That spirit is palpable. You can sense it even now. The church actively supports two schools. One is run by the Patrician Brothers. The other is run by the Montfort Brothers of St Gabriel. One school educates children with normal needs. The other focuses on those who are blind and deaf. Beyond its educational role St Louis Church has a rich history of growth. Besant Nagar Perungudi and Vettuvankanni parishes all branched off from it. This shows the church’s expanding influence.
