St. Libori

In 1904, the cornerstone of St. Libori Church was laid in Dortmund-Körne. The copper-green roof of St. Libori’s tower became a landmark, visible from all directions. The church withstood storms and World War II bombings with minimal damage. St. Libori has witnessed significant events. In 1905, Rector Paul Schwiete arrived as the first pastor. The first mass was held within the newly built walls of St. Libori. In 1906, a relic of St. Liborius was brought to the church. New altars were installed in 1907. The Kurler Catholic community gifted St. Libori a valuable Easter candlestick, crafted between 1600 and 1750. Between 1907 and 1918, the church’s interior was enhanced. A confessional, communion rail, pulpit, saint figures, and a baptismal font were added. Three bronze bells were hung in the tower in 1913, dedicated to St. John the Baptist and St. Agnes. Tragically, in 1917, two large bells were removed for ammunition production. St. Libori became an independent parish in 1920. Later, St. Martin’s and St. Meinolf’s parishes were formed from it. Two steel bells arrived in 1921, dedicated to St. Liborius and St. Joseph. The church saw its first interior painting in 1928-1929. During World War II, St. Libori suffered only minor damage. More bells were sacrificed for munitions in 1942. The church’s second interior painting occurred in 1952, reflecting the style of the time. In 2000, St. Libori, St. Martin, and St. Meinolf parishes formed the Pastoralverbund Dortmund-Mitte-Ost. Pastor Dr. Korfmacher took over leadership in 2003. Today, the St. Liborius parish is located at Liboristraße 18. You can visit for prayer or sightseeing. The community invites you to the “Open Church.”
