A crisp winter morning in 1937. That’s when St Lawrence High School truly began. Before that it was St John Chrysostom’s School a much smaller institution in Bowbazar. But Father Lawrence Rodrigues SJ had a vision. He envisioned a school that stood as a beacon of learning and discipline. He held Sunday raffles raising money to buy land in Ballygunge. This leafy campus far from the congestion of Bowbazar.
St Lawrence High School isn’t just a school. It’s a legacy. Founded in 1810 it’s one of Kolkata’s oldest. It started as a simple elementary school. Gradually growing and evolving. It changed names and locations. Always striving for excellence.
The move to Ballygunge in 1937 marked a turning point. The new school was impressive. A magnificent building a beautiful garden and a large playground. A far cry from its cramped previous home. The imposing eucalyptus trees along Ritchie Road. They still stand today silent witnesses to years of learning and laughter.
