St Lambert United Church wasn’t always located here. Its story begins much earlier. In 1855 a small group of Methodist Protestants held services in a rented building. By 1866 they’d built their own church on Victoria Avenue a Wesleyan Methodist Church later renamed St Lambert Methodist Church. A Presbyterian congregation initially shared that space. They eventually built their own church St Cuthbert’s Presbyterian Church between Victoria and Lorne Avenues in 1892.
The year 1925 marked a significant turning point. Methodist Congregational and 70% of Presbyterian churches across Canada united forming The United Church of Canada. St Lambert’s Methodist and St Cuthbert’s Presbyterian churches continued separately for two years under the new United Church banner. Finally in 1927 they officially merged creating St Lambert United Church. Services were held in St Cuthbert’s building while the Methodist building became the church school. They dreamed of a larger church but the Great Depression delayed their plans.
Their dream materialized in 1937. The current church building on Desaulniers Boulevard was constructed. This impressive structure seating 490 people was dedicated that year. Expansion continued with the addition of a manse in 1946 a meeting hall in 1949 and a Christian education building in 1956. These additions reflect the growing congregation and its active role in the community. The church even held annual rummage sales and antique sales beginning in 1959 and 1967 respectively. These events became important community gatherings.
In 1998 the St Lambert Baptist Church joined St Lambert United Church for worship services. They continued worshipping together until the Baptist Church dissolved in 2008.
Today St Lambert United Church stands as a vibrant center of faith community and service. It continues to welcome all people reflecting its inclusive and caring spirit.
