Established on June 21 1967 St Kenneth Catholic Church stands proudly in Plymouth Michigan. Its story is one of growth community and unwavering faith. Father James Machak the founding pastor oversaw the church’s initial construction. The first Mass was held in a temporary space Tanger Elementary School. The dedication of the first church building took place on February 23 1968 a momentous occasion for the burgeoning parish.
The early years saw the formation of a parish council and various commissions dedicated to worship service and education. Activities flourished The Women’s Guild began serving post-funeral luncheons. The first Family Fun Festival was held in September 1974 a testament to the growing community spirit. The church’s expansion continued unabated.
Under Father John Anthony Lombardini’s leadership young women were commissioned as Ministers of the Altar in 1976. Generous donations led to the creation of an Arch Cross and a statue of the church’s patron saint St Kenneth. These donations are commemorated on plaques in the former church entrance now the Parish Hall.
Father William Pettit served as pastor from 1978 to 1997 the longest tenure of any pastor to date. His leadership oversaw significant improvements including the installation of air conditioning in the church and hall. By 1985 the parish was debt-free a remarkable achievement celebrated with a ceremonial mortgage burning.
The parish’s continued growth necessitated a larger church. A substantial building fund drive generated over one million dollars enabling construction of a new church. Cardinal Szoka dedicated this new building on April 28 1990. His presence marked a significant moment not only for St Kenneth but also for Cardinal Szoka himself. He was soon to assume a new role in Rome for Pope John Paul II.
Father Joseph Mallia succeeded Father Bill. He was assisted by Father Paul known for his philosophical homilies and his love of ice cream. Father Paul initiated the popular St Kenneth Ice-Cream Social. In 1993 the church choir even traveled to Rome singing at St Peter’s Basilica for Pope John Paul II.
Further expansion included adding office and meeting space. The rectory was renovated and the Mary K Lynch Conference Center now the St Laurence Room was added. New ministries emerged including St Vincent de Paul Society Healthcare Ministry and Stephen’s Ministry. Even the parking lot was enlarged.
Father Thomas Belczak became the fifth pastor. He maintains the church’s active and vibrant community spirit. Numerous weekend and part-time priests have contributed. Father George Charnley known for his lively spirit joined in 2012. In 2009 the social hall and kitchen underwent extensive renovations. This renovation included a new ceiling stone tile floor and a new roof. It also included a state-of-the-art dishwashing area to use real dishes cups and silverware.
The history of St Kenneth Catholic Church is far more than bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to the faith community’s devotion service and enduring spirit. Its ongoing growth underscores the enduring power of faith hope and love. It’s a place where community flourishes. A place where faith is celebrated. A place you won’t want to leave.
