Did you ever imagine a church blossoming from a handful of families? The St. Katherine Orthodox Christian Church of America in Carlsbad is a testament to such growth. In the fall of 2011, a small group of families, yearning for an Orthodox presence in North San Diego County, planted the seed for this vibrant community. With the blessing of Archbishop Benjamin, their first Divine Liturgy echoed through the library of St. Katherine College on August 28, 2011. St. Katherine Orthodox Christian Church of America quickly outgrew its temporary home in the college library. Within a year, they moved into a dedicated chapel, shared with the college students during the week. The growth continued, fueled by faith and the desire for a permanent space. Through prayers and generous support, their dream materialized in November 2014. St. Katherine Orthodox Christian Church of America found a spacious 5,000 square foot home in Carlsbad. This new space provided room for worship, administrative offices, and fellowship. The original handful of families blossomed into 30, their children’s laughter filling the air. The small 600 square foot chapel was replaced by a beautiful 2,500 square foot sanctuary. The church received the OCA Planting Grant for three consecutive years, enabling them to support a full-time priest. Even their bookstore benefited from a planting grant from St. Tikhon’s Seminary Press. Over 14 people were baptized in 2014-2015. Donors contributed generously, providing a magnificent iconostasis, beautiful icons, and essential church furnishings. In 2015, Archbishop Benjamin himself blessed the new worship space. The St. Katherine Orthodox Christian Church of America continues to grow. New families are welcomed. Children bring energy and life to the parish. Their patron saint, St. Katherine, and their unofficial patron, St. John of San Francisco, inspire their devotion. The parish reflects the diversity of Orthodoxy in America, drawing members from various ethnic backgrounds and walks of life. Services are conducted in English. They are enriched by the chant traditions of different Orthodox cultures and the music of American and Russian composers. St. Katherine Orthodox Christian Church of America isn’t just a place of worship. It is a testament to the power of faith, community, and the enduring spirit of Orthodoxy. It’s a place where hearts find the paradise they long for.
