What if these granite steps could talk? St. Joseph’s Seminary and Church stands before us. It is a testament to Macau’s rich history. The church is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

St. Joseph’s Seminary and Church has a story that began long ago. The Society of Jesus priests settled here in 1728. This residence became the Seminary. It was officially a Diocesan Seminar in 1858. The church itself was finished in 1758.

Look closely at the facade. It is one of the best examples of Portuguese baroque architecture abroad. In China, only St. Joseph’s Church and the St. Paul’s Ruins display this style.

Consider the technicians who broke the rock to build this complex. Their work is remarkable.

Now, notice the letters “JHS”. These letters stand for “Jesus Hominum Salvator”. This Latin phrase means “Jesus, Saviour of men”. St. Joseph’s Seminary has the earliest built dome in the Far East. The swirling columns inside mark its unique architecture.

St. Joseph’s Seminary has greatly influenced Macau. It impacted social development, education, and art in Macau and China. For over 30 years, the seminar cultivated Catholic clergy. Missionaries and local students learned multiple languages. They contributed to missionary work and cultural exchange. Their impact reached Macau, mainland China, and Asia.

Inside St. Joseph’s Church lies a precious relic. It is a bone fragment from S. Francisco Xavier’s arm. It once belonged to Madre de Deus Church, now St. Paul’s Ruins. St. Joseph’s Seminary was a pioneer. It offered education similar to university degrees.

Step inside the Treasure of Sacred Art. It is located to the right of the Seminary. You might spot star fruit on the tree outside. The Treasure has eight sections across two floors. The exhibition showcases religious artifacts. See paintings, icons, books, and vessels. Passages, photos, and videos guide you. They reveal the history of St. Joseph’s Seminary.

Observe the pictures inside St. Joseph’s Church. Some date back to 1914. They show students in uniform. You can also view sections of the oil painting “Our Lady, Patron Saint of Macao”. It depicts the Virgin Mary. The background shows Guia Hill as it once looked.

The treasure also includes important books. A “Chinese-Portuguese Dictionary” was published in 1833. Missionary Pe. Joaquim Afonso Gonçalves wrote it. He was a Portuguese scholar in Chinese Studies. He taught Chinese to foreigners. He also taught Latin to the Chinese.

St. Joseph’s Seminary and Church stands as a symbol of cultural exchange. Its history echoes through these halls. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty. Reflect on its enduring legacy.
