Picture this: A grand clock tower stands tall. It’s a silent sentinel guarding St Joseph’s Lower Primary School. This isn’t just any school. It’s a place steeped in history. Built within the walls of the South Barracks a former British military site. These barracks once housed 1200 soldiers. Imagine the echoes of marching feet. The sounds of bugle calls fading into the past.

St Joseph’s Lower Primary School opened in 1945. It started small just 73 girls and a Headmaster Mr John Dunne. Classes were even held in Plata Villa. A place with its own story. It served as a family home an orphanage and even officer accommodation.

Years passed. The school grew. It became co-educational in 1969. It was renamed St Joseph’s First School in 1971. It operated from Plata Villa. But the building aged and couldn’t meet the needs of modern education.

Then came 1992. The South Barracks were transformed. St Joseph’s Lower and Upper Primary Schools found a new home. The Hon J L Moss the Minister for Education inaugurated the new facilities. A new chapter for the school began. The transformation blended the site’s rich heritage with modern education.

The school’s staff even put on a spectacular pantomime. A modern rendition of Cinderella with a unique Llanito twist. It was a joyous celebration of the school community and creativity. The Minister for Education Professor John Cortes even participated. He delighted the audience with his portrayal of a typical Gibraltarian abuelo.

Today St Joseph’s Lower Primary School thrives. It offers a nurturing learning environment. It’s a beautiful blend of tradition and modernity. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Gibraltar. A place where history and education intertwine. A place where children learn and grow within the shadow of a clock that has witnessed centuries of change.
