The first time I saw St Joseph’s Church, it was a warm summer evening, and the sun was painting the sky with hues of orange and pink. The majestic church stands tall on Melbourne Street, overlooking the vibrant streets of Queenstown.

St Joseph’s Church is a testament to the strong faith and resilience of the Queenstown community. Built in 1898, it was a labor of love, with many parishioners donating their time and resources to create this beautiful building. The church is made from locally sourced schist, a type of metamorphic rock that was quarried in the surrounding region.

The church has a rich history, and the fact that it was built debt-free speaks volumes about the dedication of the community. The previous church building was built in 1863 on Church Street. But the Queenstown Parish was broken away from Invercargill in 1873, and it needed a dedicated presbytery. This building, which was constructed in 1877, became a convent in 1882 to house Dominican nuns looking after the newly opened St Joseph’s School. This school, along with the convent, became the heart of Catholicism in Queenstown until the present St Joseph’s Church was built in 1898.

As you stand in the shadow of the church, take a moment to imagine the hard work and devotion of the parishioners who built this place of worship. Their dedication has ensured that St Joseph’s Church continues to stand as a beacon of faith and hope in the heart of Queenstown, continuing to serve as a place of solace and community for people of all faiths and walks of life to this day.
