St Joseph’s Catholic Church Corinda has been a beacon of hope. It’s a place of solace for generations. Its story began in the early 20th century. The community recognized the need for a dedicated place of worship.

Let’s step back in time to 1912. Imagine the excitement as the foundation stone was laid. Father J. F. McCarthy officiated the ceremony. Residents from surrounding areas gathered. They came from Corinda, Graceville, and even as far as Ipswich. Interestingly, it wasn’t a stone laying. It was a “stump capping”.

Later that year on November 3, 1912, St Joseph’s Catholic Church Corinda was blessed. Coadjutor Archbishop James Duhig led the opening. The original church was modest. Mr Geo Trotter jnr, a local architect, designed it. William Ross constructed it of wood with iron roofing. The main area measured forty-seven feet by twenty-seven feet. Two sacristy doors were at the eastern end. The initial contract was only five hundred and twenty-three pounds. An additional nineteen pounds covered incidental expenses. The church stood where the Parish Office is now. This is on the corner of Oxley Road and Clewley Street.

As the community grew, so did the need for a larger church. In 1969, a new St Joseph’s Catholic Church Corinda was built. The architects were Cullen Fagg Hargreaves Mooney & Partners.

Over the years, numerous priests have served St Joseph’s Catholic Church, Corinda. Father T. Hays served from 1892 to 1911. Father Patrick Murphy followed from 1923 to 1942. Each priest has contributed to the spiritual growth of the parish. Father Mark Percival is the current Parish Priest. He continues to guide the community.
