Beneath the Dublin sky stands St. Joseph’s Carmelite Church a testament to faith and history. St. Joseph’s Carmelite Church welcomes all. Let’s delve into the story of this house of worship.

Originally, a simple wooden chapel stood here. It served as a chapel of ease starting in 1870. This humble chapel paved the way for the grander structure we see today. The current granite church replaced the wooden chapel.

Construction of St. Joseph’s Carmelite Church began in 1875. The talented architects O’Neill and Byrne designed the church. In 1880, the church was finally completed and consecrated. Its granite facade reflects the enduring strength of faith.

The Berkeley Road Parish was formed in 1890. It was created from part of St. Michan’s Parish. Interestingly, the parish is named Berkeley Road. However, St. Joseph’s Carmelite Church is actually located on Berkeley Street.

To celebrate the parish’s establishment, the North-Western bell tower was erected. This addition occurred between 1892 and 1893. John L. Robinson designed the bell tower.

In July 1983, the Discalced Carmelites took charge of St. Joseph’s Carmelite Church. Their care ensures the church remains a vibrant center for worship. They continue the traditions of this sacred space.

Inside St. Joseph’s Carmelite Church, beauty awaits. The west end window in the Blessed Virgin aisle is a masterpiece. Hardman & Co. created this stained glass window.

The reredos features life-size angels. Mary Redmond, a Dublin artist, created them. She is also known for the statue of Fr. Mathew on O’Connell Street. Her artistry enhances the spiritual atmosphere.

Even with pandemic restrictions, the spirit of St. Joseph’s Carmelite Church persevered. Though access was limited, the hope remained to share its beauty. Now, with restrictions lifted, the church welcomes visitors.

Masses are held regularly at St. Joseph’s Carmelite Church. On Sundays, a Filipino Choir enhances the 11:45 am service. Their voices add to the vibrant worship experience.
